We source ours from a single valley in the Kiso Mountains, where trees grow for 300 years before a single bottle is filled. The oil is steam-distilled from fallen timber and pruning offcuts — no living tree is cut for our products.
The Science
What Hinoki actually does to your skin — and the numbers behind it
Hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) contains hinokitiol, a naturally occurring compound with documented antibacterial properties. In third-party laboratory testing by the Japan Functional Food Analysis and Research Center, Hinoki oil eradicated 99.9% of Staphylococcus aureus — the primary bacteria behind skin breakouts and body odor — within 60 minutes. The same testing confirmed it eradicates 99.9% of Streptococcus mutans, the bacteria that causes tooth decay, within 60 minutes. Tests also confirmed full skin safety via clinical prick test, passed oral safety testing (no negative effect from ingestion), and verified the oil is free of heavy metals.
The oral finding matters more than you might think. A recently announced finding shows that as periodontal bacteria worsens, gingivalis bacteria can circulate through the body from the blood vessels and increase the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke. Controlling the bacteria at the source — every night — is the point of our Dental Gel.
It also carries alpha-pinene and other volatile terpenes with anti-inflammatory properties, which reduce redness and calm irritated skin after sun, wind, and cold exposure.

The Source

Kiso Hinoki cypress has been grown in the Kiso area of Nagano Prefecture for over 300 years. All Kiso Hinoki is grown in national forests, with the numbers available for harvesting subject to rigorous government controls. Its primary use is the most demanding of all — the timber is reserved for Japan's important national temples and shrines, including Ise Shrine, Japan's most sacred site. As such it is a sacred treasure of Japan, and the annual yield is deliberately small.
Ise Shrine has been rebuilt from Kiso Hinoki every 20 years for over 1,200 years — the same wood we draw our oil from. The forest itself is referred to as a "therapy road," with proven healing and health-promoting effects.
We source our oil from the same valley, steam-distilled from fallen timber and pruning offcuts. No living tree is cut for our products.

Why the Kiso Valley is called a therapy road
The Kiso forest has documented healing and health-promoting effects. The ancient mountain highway Nakasen-do runs through old-growth cypress, and the forest is recognized for the phytoncides its trees release — volatile compounds with measurable effects on cortisol and immune function. These are the same compounds in Hinoki oil.
Spending time in this forest reduces stress at a biochemical level. Our products bring a fraction of that chemistry home.
The Routine
How to build a routine that survives the trail
Most men use too many products. Here's the full Ridgeline routine in four steps.
Morning
Rinse with water. Apply face cleanser only if your skin needs it — every other day is enough for most skin types. Follow with a dime-sized amount of moisturizer while your skin is still damp.
Post-activity
Body wash in the shower. Shampoo every two to three days unless you've been in salt water or heavy dust — over-washing strips the oils that keep your scalp balanced.
Evening
Moisturizer again if your skin feels tight, especially after time in sun or wind. The squalane in our formula absorbs overnight and makes a visible difference within a week.

Is Hinoki safe for sensitive skin?
Yes. Hinokitiol is non-irritating at cosmetic concentrations and does not contain the common allergens found in synthetic fragrance. If you have a known cypress allergy, patch test first.

Why does it smell different from other Hinoki products?
Most "Hinoki" products use synthetic fragrance formulated to approximate the scent. Ours uses steam-distilled oil from actual Kiso cypress. The difference is the same as a fresh-cut forest and an air freshener.
